I have a 253 engine from a 1973 HQ van, just wondering is there any difference between this engine and say a 253 powered Holden vehicle of 1977 or latter.

ADR 27a is the difference, you can turn a 73 engine into an adr27a for rego. Heads and manifold are the main changes.
