What year did the first Commodores start and where they available with a 253 or which Holden vehicle was fitted originally with a 253 after 1976.
I have a 1976 Toyota vehicle in Qld and would like to fit a 253 Holden engine in it but I'm told in Qld the engine for the transplant must be latter than the year of the vehicle.

The 253 engine was introduced in 1969 and ran into the mid 80s.

You can get a 76 spec engine from a 76 Torana or HX/Z Holden or 78 VB Commodore.

The Blue engine 81 spec, can be sourced from a WB Holden or VC Commodore.

Hi Fred.

As Warren has said, the 253 V8 has been around in various forms since 1969.

You said that you're fitting it to a Toyota vehicle. If it's a passenger car (i.e. not a HiLux or LandCruiser etc) & it is plated 7/76 or later with ADR27A on the A
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Hopefully your Toyota is early 1976 and hence pre ADR27A, then you can run an earlier engine. The best mix of parts for a 253 is an early engine eg out of a HJ, with an early 308 4BBL manifold and quadrajet and a blue/black motor V8 HEI dizzy.

Hi guys,I took a look at the plate and it tells me 7/75
although when I purchased it I was told its a 1976 Crown.
It looks like I can use my 523 engine and transmission.
I'll check with the transport dept first and let everyone know.
Thanks Fred.
