hi all im new here.
just a quick question. i'm about to do a rack and pinion conversion on my hg using a rear mounted commodore rack, and was wondering weather the starter on my chev is going to be a problem. also are there any other ways of doing this type of conversion.

Don,t know about the starter but we are in the middle of doing the same on a 308HG. You will have to change the extractors on the drivers side as the shaft will not go through. Castle Auto electrical and exhaust in Chewton VIC make a set for the chev bu

I was just wondering why you want to fit a rack and pinion. I thought the HK had Chev engines as standard so they should fit a HG without changing the steering.

Cos i can:-) and for a more positive feel in the steering. figure i'm speending heaps to upgrade suspension and brakes to make it stop and go round corners, so should do something about the steering aswell.

Make sure you understand how steeering geometry works and look closely at all kits. Not all are designed properly and I have seen plenty of dissapointed people over many years who have changed the steering and were left wondering why they did it. There

I think from memory those guidlines show a narrowed rack and don't cover the use of a stock one. A stock one will give you bump steer if you install it according to the instructions for a narrowed one.

Thanx Brian, your a wealth of knowledge. one question; does what you have stated above apply when using later HQ stubs and brakes? Also just checked measurements in guidelines, and you are correct, rack needs to be narrowed 95mm. i was thinking would inne

Yes it will work with HQ stubs and brakes.

You can not narrow a rack by changing parts to alter the length of the tie rods. This is why I said you must understand steering geometry when you do something like this. The critical thing is the distance b

HQs have 2 steering boxs. The common one is 3.9 turns from lock to lock. The other one that is hard to find is on 3.3 turns from lock to lock. I'm not sure which models they were in tho. I had one in my Sandman ute and it was great to drive, much better t
