hi fellers,
im pretty new to working with the old red motor, but looking through the forums, (was the HP Block page) they were talking about putting a red 202 crank in the older engines ie: 149/161/179hp/186, they said you can do it with a few mods to the crank or somthing. These engines all have a stroke of 3 inch (reffering back to that page) and the 202 has a stroke of 3.25 inches. Now i worked out that if all the earlier engines had a 3 inch stroke i could work out the bore sizes for each. Heres what i found 149= stroke:3.00 Bore:3.25......161= stroke:3.00 bore:3.38.... 179= stroke: 3.00 bore: 3.563 ..... 186= stroke 3.00 bore= 3.63....

the 202 has bore of 3.625 and bore of 3.25. what i noticed here fellers, is that if the 202 crank with stroke of 3.25 went in the 149 with a bore of 3.25 YOUD HAVE A SQUARE BORE ENGINE! now isnt this the ultimate sort of engine??? correct me if im wrong. worked out the cubic inches of this combo would be 161.77 or 162 cui roughly!!!

Please tell me if it IS possible to wack in a 202 crank in a 149 (with a few mods to crank of course) Im real excited that i worked this out, does anybody know of someone doing this?? and would a "square" bore engine of 3.25 by 3.25 be awsome?? sure the cubes may be down abit, but youd still have a very strong block y'know. any info i would love, thanks!!

You can cerainly do it. All that would be required would be to grind the mains down the the smaller size of the 3" stroke crank and fit a 202 cam (to clear the rod bolts). BUT there will be two problems:

1. The rear main seal - just need a 202 crank to

thanks byron!
what i thought was if the 149 was a virgin block, or a very low milage engine, was to keep the 149 pistons so you could still have the 3.25 bore. when putting a 202 crank in an earlier engine ie 149, you would use the 202 conrods too wouldn

Yes you could use 202 rods (blue or black ones are stronger) and the same length as all other red motors but you wont be able to use 149 pistons. They will stick about .245 inch out of the bore!

haha, byron!
you could gouge out the combust chamber to be round shape, dig in abit, hahah youd have KILLAR compression! bit of piston sticking out of block and into gouged area in head lol!!!

haha my grandad would say: add a few more head gaskets on
