Howdy,
The wife's looking at selling her HQ tonner because she's finding it too difficult to park due to heavy steering (253 with 215's on front). I'm looking at retro fitting a HQ power steering set-up to fix this. I'm assuming this is fairly straight forward - has anyone here got any advice - should I be looking at a new rack & pinion conversion instead?

Hey Hornet, mate you could try a set of "manual" steering arms from a HJ on as these arms are longer than the standard HQ's. The HQ arm (all) are the same length as the HJ-WB power steering arms. Using the longer arms should give a lighter feel.

The power steering fit up is pretty straight forward . Just make sure you get all the brackets and spacers with the pump . Also , my old HX was pretty heavy until I fitted new tyres , 215s , the problem was the old ones were worn on the inside as it neede

The power steering rack is a direct bolt on replacement, the mounting of the pump is the drama.
The other thing to check is the inflation of the tyres. Keep them on the high side of normal, and aligned correctly.

Thanks guys,
I usually keep the tyres at 38-40Psi. I was reading another post about scrub-radius which may also be contributing to the problem. It's only got 7' mags but they do have a nice looking off-set.
Where does the power steering pump normally ge

HQs dont actually have a steering rack. With the power steering setup you have a power assisted steering box.

This steering setup is called a Drag Link.

Oops. I meant box not rack. Anyhow, I assume the hydraulic lines go into the box then, so it would be best to mount it on the even side anyway?

Hi Beige Hornet.

All HQ to WB power steering pumps (except HQ 350) mount on the RH (driver's) side of the engine from the factory, this keeps the hydraulic hoses short & neat.

Just find an original pump with the correct brackets, pulleys, spacers bo

Have your front end rubber checked first. My first HQ has a dropped front (age) and no power steer. Did nto drive or steer well. Great muscles though. When I had the rubbers done it was a different car. Teh standard HQ P/S kit works a treat. And yes I run

Check how many turns from lock to lock it is, most HQ boxs are 3.9 turns lock to lock, but there are some boxs that are 3.3 turns and are heavier in the steering.
I had one but broke it and have been looking for another one as I do a bit o

Hornet,
I just fitted P/S last week, was quiet easy, the only problem I had was getting the right spacers and correct fittings on the hydraulic hoses.
In the end I made my own spacers and got enzed to make me up a new hose.
I bought the pump and box fr

Hi madcow.

That's one I haven't heard of before. What ratio is it.

AFAIK the standard manual steering box from HQ to WB are all 20:1.

The only odd one is the 16:1 box used in some HQ/HJ GTSs.

Thanks guys,
Due to space & lack of funds my wife had to sell the tonner. We both shed a quiet tear as it left but we have some good photo's & plenty of memories. Hope she gives the new owners as much fun as she gave us. Bye 'Candy', we wont forget you!

Thats the box I've been looking for Dr Terry. 16-1.
My Sandman ute had one in it originally. It got changed out trs ago after an altercation with a gutter and thought the box was damaged, but as it turned out it was the steering column broken. But by the
