totally stripped the engine tonight and now trying to figure out what i want to put in it. any suggestions on what to use to make a pretty mean 186 for a trimatic lj? have a pretty limited sort of budget round $1500 - $2000 and wondering what i can get for that? already have extractors and holley manifold and just put a new 3.36 centre in. thanks for any advice.

I reckon best bang for buck will be:
Red 202 block - almost free.
Blue crank and rods - I can get you these for less than $100.
Worked red head - keep your eyes open, $100 (I have one here).
Suitable grind cam - $175.
Holley to suit your manifold. |

why do i want a 202 block? aren't 186 and 202 blocks the same? how much can you bore them? my 186 is already 40 thou. can you go 60 thou?interested in your head, holley and dizzy. is it worth working a stock red head or should i just go yella terra? thank

Hi camlj.
No, 186 & 202 blocks are not the same. They have the same bore dimension, but the 202 has larger diameter main bearings to accept the 202 (longer stroke) crankshaft.
You can tunnel bore a 186 block to take the 202 crank, but that's a lot o |

sorry, but i don't quite understand. if i buy a 202 block and and stick say a yella terra head on it i've essentially built a 202. i already have a 186 and originally wanted it for its shorter stroke, higher revving characteristics. are you saying its not

You've answered your own question - ie shorter stroke means less cubes. At the end of the day in 90% of cases anyway, less stroke and more revs in a street car means you go slower. Torque is the answer and that is what a 202 has over a 186, especially if |

thanks for your help byron. appreciate it mate. if i bore the 186 out to 60 thou i'm almost there in cubes anyway. i've stuffed around for long enough and really just want to get it underway. i'll see how i go at the wreckers tomorrow though. where abouts

Well, not quite. A 186 bored 40 thou gives you 190 ci, 60 thou gives 192. A 202 bored 40 thou gives you 206 ci & 60 thou results in 208 ci. As Byron said the ext |
