Hello all, I got half way to work this morning & my wife rang saying that she could not start the car because it was as if the key no longer fitted (VP Commodore).
I turned around as she had to get our daughter to school. Got some of the way home & she rang again saying that it was all ok now using the spare key so I turned around & headed back to work phone rang again & she said that it's still stuffed.
Would this be fixed with some graphite powder shoved down the lock? Is it a common problem?
The funny thing is that one of my colleagues turned up to work this morning carrying the ignition lock out of his Pugeot with exactly the same problem.

I have this problem with one of my Commodores, the key will work one way and not the other, with both keys, just have to remember to turn it around.

Thanks Warren, I got home & my wife says it's all ok now so I tried my key. It worked twice & then stopped working.
When it fails to work the key does not seem to go in as far as it should & no amount of jiggling & turning seems to make it work.

Hi Jim.
The problem is with the lock barrel. It's a lot of work to swap columns just because of a faulty barrel. Either swap the whole barrel & switch from 1 column to the other or dismantle & repair your existing barrel, their not difficult.

Had the same thing with my VN. Apparently the gunge from the key builds up in the end of the barrel. Worked ok if you used a medium sized hammer to pound on the end of it, then it would turn.
Locksmith sprayed a bunch of contact cleaner in the barrel |

Thanks Dr Terry & Jabba, Yep I have decided to just change the lock because My VN column has virtually nothing left on it up top.
I think that the gunge buildup is probably the answer due to me making it worse when i put graphite powder in it.

All fixed & running with the VN lock & a wife complaining about having different keys for the door & ignition.
Jabba You were dead righttap the key in with a rubber mallet & it works.
The VP's tamper proof snap off bolt was a lot more efficie |
