Hi,

I am scratching my head here as I am a bit of a novice and I do not want to anything too wrong.
I have some converted rust, repaired rust and new sheetmetal in my car.

I want to coat my repairs with a paintbrush in spaces like footwells, wheelarches, cavities etc.

For this, I was hoping to find a suitable primer or the like that will prevent corrosion and stay there till I one day finish the restoration.

It should preferably be weldable as well.

POR15 comes to mind but I have no experience and maybe it is too difficult to re-coat later? It is not weldable either.

In the pics on the net, these primers are often dark red but I have not found anything suitable.

Maybe someone here has a suggestion?

Kind Regards
Bernt

Hi Bernt, I was thinking of red oxide primer but you won't be able to weld through that as it will just burn off. Perhaps a welding supply retailer could suggest a weld through primer?

There are primers available called weld through primers.

They are an etch primer which you apply to bare metal (such as the inside of rust repair sections etc) which protect from rust and also allow you to weld through them.

Any decent paint supply

You can buy what is called cold galvanising or duragal. It is very rich in zinc & they reckon you paint it straight onto the rust (once de scaled).

Hi Jim and group,

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I do appreciate them very much!

Sounds good and promising but I did an experiment with some of this gal stuff and some months after I sprayed a test sheet, rust was coming through again. It was
