Hi,
I have a HG belmont ute and am considering replacing the tired 186 and aussie 4 speed with a small block chev. My thoughts were either a 350 or 327 if I can get my hands on one. I've heard the 327 is a better engine, why is that? Am I right in saying a T350 will be best suited to a stock small block? This engine will be stock for now.
I realise I will have to get a 9 inch diff. My mate said they are better than the equivalent holden 10 bolts. To put HQ drums on the back, the diff will have to be shortened. I've been told that to get the HQ drums on, the stud pattern is simply drilled??? I'm thinking HQ for the wider range of wheel options, and better braking.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated

327 or 350, either will be OK. 350 engines are torquier, 327 engines are "revvier". A TH350 will fit pretty well in the stock tunnel, and can be column or T-bar, column needing some fab work (but not much), T-bar using stock HT/G trimatic shifter. You'll |

Would the VL diff need shortening or will it be the correct size already?
Thanks for the advice too

It will be approx 25mm or so shorter already. Just measure the width of any VL diff as they should be the same width across the range.
