What is the conventional way of running the battery cable from the boot to the engine bay, through the cabin or under the car?

I would look at the way the fuel line etc is run and then do this with the battery cable, on the other side though. If running Holden engine this is great as statrter is on the passenger side and fuel and brakes on drive's side.

As Warren said, fasten it alone the chassis rail, but make sure you attach it at ~1 foot intervals and keep it away from the exhaust (don't laugh I had a mate that draped his over it (thankfully it was pointed out before he started it up)!
