I have to replace the welsh plugs in the back of the block of my 253 and was just wondering how to get them out? and also when fitting the new one's do u put a seal in with them and if so what type?

use a screw driver to put a hole in the plug with a hemer then leaver it out use brass plugs because they dont rust ,steel ones will rust from the in side out

I normally tap on one edge with a screwdriver & hammer, & this rotates them enough to get a screwdriver behind & lever them out. If that makes sense. They probably don't need sealant being an interference fit, but I usually put a light smear of 'stag' com

In case you hadn't already worked it out, you have to remove the engine and/or the gearbox/flywheel to do it.

tap them in useing a socket spanner of the same diameter useing a smear of sealant around the edge simple cheers

Hi there
The guys at Precision Auto Engineering Perth recommended Loctite 680 Retaining compound as a sealer for the core plugs, so I went with that.
I guess it had proved to be the most reliable for them.
BTW, anyone know where PAE are these days,

I've always used a punch and hammer to unseat the welsh plugs then a pair of multi grips to lever them out.
I also use STAG paste and swear by it.
I use a large socket that fits inside the welsh plug to tap them in. I usually use a 1/2 inch drive s
