Today my XB started to make a rattling noise under exeleration, its a very loud tapping noise, and the vaccuum guage goes crazy, thought when im just cruising along its fine and has no rattling noise whatsoever, also when in park i can rev the car quite hard without getting the noise, i have no idea what it is, i dont wanna drive my car unless its somethin major. if anyone has any ideas could you please let me know, im hopin its somethin minor.

any help would be great

It's probably detonating. You need to have the ignition timing checked/sorted. If you leave it too long? You'll melt holes in the pistons if it's bad enough.

Was it missing or rattling? If rattling, was it the engine or did it feel more like another part of the cars drivetrain? Could be something easy like timing or it could be something else. Need to narrow it down a smidge.

It could be the timing chain on its way out

Yes it can happen out of the blue. The mechanical advance or vac advance unit can jam.

[edit]I can also be caused by water leaking in to the cylinder via the head gasket.
