Possibly the Overlander has some future yet.

I thought I was stumped with future use for the old girl, because there was no way to gear it up any further without destroying it's originality totally. But i've been reading about the evoltuion of the TH400. You see in it's later evolution it became known as the 3L80 ie 3 speed, longitudinal mount and 8000kg GVW nominal application. Now we all know the 4L60E has been fitted to Commodores for a long time now (Since VR IIRC). But apparantly the 4L80E gearbox as fitted to Chev and GMC trucks is basically a modified TH400. 1st, 2nd and 3rd speed ratios are the same, and looking at photos of the boxes although the 4L80E is about 4" longer, the extension housing appears to be twice as long. Now, Holden has sold the Chev/GMC Suburban here for a while and this was a 4WD 4L80E. Things are looking better too as apparantly the 4WD 4L80E is identical at the rear to a 4WD TH400.
This is where I start to get interested as the TH400, adapter and J20 transfer case in an Overlander is basically Chevy Blazer. So it looks like the transfer and J20 will bolt straight to the 4L80E - surely it's not thart simple?? More investigation will tell, but if it does the only hurdle I face fitment wise is it looks like the case of the 4L80E is about 25-50mm longer than the 3L80, so I need to change tailshaft lengths and adjust transfer case mounts - easy.

The question I have for probably Mick and Dr Terry is about control of the electronic 4L80E. I have heard of people adapting them to high power LS1's, but has anyone heard of one being fitted to a VR-VSIII or VT Holden V8? Basically interested in if someone can modify a Memcal out of say a VR (say a BFPL2416) to control a 4L80E instead of a 4L60E?? As I'm fitting an injected 5L to the Overlander it's not a big step to initially run it as an 808 ECU but upgrade to a 424 using the VR auto harness.

Hi Byron,
This pic may be of interest to you. It shows a comparison of many of the transmissions you mentioned and includes dimensions, mount placements etc.
You may have seen it before.

1.5" difference in length. I can live with that.
