Hello everybody, cool site you got here. I need to know a few things about my HJ 1 Tonner, it originally had a 4.44:1 diff in it, according to the codes on the plates under the bonnet, but somewhere along its evolutionary path, someone has transplanted a 2.78:1 diff in it, and consequently the speedo is way out, it has a 202 motor and an M22 gearbox, does anybody know what colour speedo driven gear I should use to make the speedo show the correct speed?(or somewhere closer than the current 20+ km/h discrepency anyway!)Also I have heard that commercial vehicles with a 4.44:1 diff had a different speedo drive gear inside the box(the one on the mainshaft that needs major surgery to change!)if so can I just use a different colour driven gear, or will I need to change both. Thanks for any help anyone might be able to give me.

A half decent spare parts bloke at a GM dealer should be able to help you out. Believe it or not you can get the extension housing off an M22 without herds of hassle. Hardest part is dropping off the reversing light switch to get access to the reverse g

I know the 3.08 diff runs a white gear, the 2.78 I think runs a dark green gear I may be wrong on that one,but if u have the patience you can try gears with more teeth will slow speedo down and less teeth will speed speedo up,

That was with 225-65x15 size tyres you may have to try different gears till you get it right, holden do have a few different gears
for different tyre sizes.

if it ain't broke we can improve it.

I have standard 14 inch rims with 205/70 R14 tyres, would a different rim/tyre combo make it easier to match up gears with my diff ratio? any help mhere at all would be well apprecated as at the moment I worry when I go through a speed camera or radar, be

I forgot to mention the M22 has a very big gap between 3rd and 4th which doesnt help the situation much, with a big load it doesnt spend much time in top gear and holds the traffic up heaps.Would an M21 or M20 be better?

278 is way too high for a 202. Even 308 would be a struggle especially if you carry loads. My tonner with the standard diff would struggle with a full tonne on board. Do a search on here somewhere there is a listing of the diff ratios and colour of driven

If you fit the 3.08 diff the speedo may be a lot closer,
the 2.78 is very tall for a 202,3.36 diff is probably best bet if your carrying heavy loads will help your 3 to 4 gap also.

if it aint broke we can improve it.

Yes you have to remember the standard cars ran 3.36 and the autos 3.55 so anything bigger will cause problems when loaded. They had to fit 411 to the tonners to get them to pull a full tonne.

Now I think of it, many guys are fitting V8s to the tonners and would kill for a 278 back end. Matbet you can do a swap, but be sure you are getting one as good as your old one. Maybe even sell it and buy a 411, there are lots around as people are changin

G'day Olaf,
The tonners had a 444, not a 411, but I wouldnt suggest you put one of them in because I have one in the HX and it revs its little butt off,but doesnt go anywhere in a hurry, yes its good with a load in the back, hardly knows its there, but c
