Does anyone know if the lower steering column bearing on a HQ-WB steering column can be replaced by a standard SKF etc bearing?

Sorry, don't know but you can buy an original lower column bearing from Coventry's. I bought one a couple of months ago.
What I am particularly interested in finding is an upper column bearing replacement...

Thanks you are a legend I owe you a beer. I ordered one today from Coventry's in WA. I can't help with the top bearing however could it be replaced with a standard SKF bearing or equivalent?

Hi Scott,
Would you have the part number for either of those bearings. I found out on the weekend that I need to order a couple of sets. The top one in my SS has lost all it's ball bearings.

I had a mate take a NOS upper column bearing into CBC Bearings to see if they could match it up and they couldn't....and the bugger won't sell his NOS one to me :-((
I think I'll have to pack the one in the Qute with grease to take most of the play out

The upper bearing is still available from holden for $20 or so. bought one the other day. I've thrown the pack away, so don't have the part number handy. The spare parts dept. just looked it up in their parts book (wasn't on the computer system, so ask th

By "shim", I mean you put the thin copper strip in between the bearing and the column housing - i.e. cut a strip of copper that will wrap around the outside of the bearing (no overlap) and then press the entire assembly into place. I just used a hammer an

Cool bananas Paul...thanks. I have been to Coventrys about the bearing but they said that the upper bearings have been NLA since about 2003...and Cov's are usually better with Holden Parts than Holden...I'll try my local, friendly Holden Dealer's Parts S

I tried my local, friendly Holden Dealer's Parts Specialist yesterday and the WB upper column bearing IS available...as an assembly with the upper column jacket....The jacket is bare (except for the bearing) and unpainted and is about $150...I politely de

Thanks for all the info guys. I got a bottom bearing from Coventry's and a good HQ column jakcet with bearing some time ago on ebay. Might be worthwhile getting another top bearing as spare. The bottom one hopefully will last another 30 yrs and 500,000 k'

By the way fella's, the number one cause of play in the top bearing is that the outer has become loose in the housing after years of wear. A new bearing won't fix it by itself; will need to shim the bearing outer with copper, brass etc so that it is a snu

Try craft shops or more specifically art supply shops. They should have the stuff. Kids use it for making stamped impressions in art class etc etc Very easy to get from the right place...hard to get from the wrong type of shop. The main thing is to make

Hi Guys, The upper bearing is available from rare spares for $17.10, part # 7800269. It suits HK-HG, HQ-WB and all commodores up to VL.
