Hi all,
Does anyone have any comments on the following regarding price, quality etc
Exchange 308 red motor (turbo block) from HM engines. $2350 Complete from sump to rocker covers Has ULP/Gas heads 12 months/100,000km warranty
I have spoken to the company and they stated that they only bore/hone to the minimum required (ie not always 60thou) They use all new bearings and pistons. Valve guides replaced as necessary, valves as required.
I would be interested to hear your input/experiences with this company.
If you know of another company that does it better/cheaper then I'm all ears too.
regards Darren

i have heard nothing but bad things about engines from HM and companies like them (RPM etc.) pay the extra for a real engine builder to do it. Edited by user Monday, 13 February 2006 11:38:08 PM(UTC)

Please elaborate???
I have heard a few rumours but when I phoned them they seemed very professional and willing to help.
They insist they don't automatically bore out engines unless they need it. There was a rumour that they always bored each engin

Be careful with the warranties - read the fine print. For your motor to be covered under warranty, you have to replace/recondition just about everything else around it - starter, alternator, dizzy, radiator etc. They also specify regular services, which i

Thanks Hairy, I tried a search before my initial post but got nothing although I do remember reading something a while back. I'll try again.
I will look in to the warranty stuff too.

Hi; I had one of these change-over long 308 motors from Repco 5 years ago. A stock engine, and yes the warranties are a load of crap as they are very strcit. however, the engine itself hasn't missed a beat. I run it on straight gas, it still goes strong

if you can, your best bet (this is what i did with my 308). Try and find someone that builds motors, not a large company. go and meet him. Tell him exactly what you want. Find out which shop he will be using for machining your heads, block etc. Have a loo

Its interesting in that that they now allow there engines to be serviced by you! I have one in my HR (it come with the car upon sale 3 years prior) and as said There warranty was pretty strict with service. Basically You had to prove it was done by a Regi |

I'm pretty happy with all the info I have received from the company and as a result I will be purchasing an exchange engine for my GTS.
A stock engine is exactly what I require and I believe that for $2350 I couldn't do it myself (depending on machinin

I haven't really priced everything but I cannot believe you can't do an engine at home for a lot less than $2350. Assuming you have the confidence to assemble stuff yourself. Let's face it, engine assembly is done in Holdens factory (or any factory) by im Edited by user Saturday, 18 February 2006 1:17:37 PM(UTC)

You are correct John, it certainly could be done cheaper than that and I am able to do it myself but I think the running around and time saved is worth those few hundred bucks.
One thing you left out is a new oil pump which is not cheap either.

Doesn't cost much to rebore the cam bearings. All the parts can be picked up on Ebay really cheap. Gaskets sets $35-$40, big ends and mains $30 -$40 , rings $35, oil pumps $30, camshafts new for $70,don't make the mistake of fitting a high pressure pump,

With fitting a change-over engine in a genuine GTS - is this going to effect your matching numbers if the engine you have is the original one? It would pay to rebuild the one you have if you want it to match up still. Spend over 2000 on the one youv'e got

Unfortunately I don't have the original engine for the GTS. I haved an 11QT motor which I ripped from a HJ Staesman. The GTS was originally a 253.M20 and I will be fittign a 308/Turbo 400 and powers steerign from the Statesman. Should make it a much ni
