I've got a problem with my car - it refuses to rev over 1500 or so when the trimatic is in gear, and won't rev past 2000 or so when in neutral. The revs seem like they're being limited by something - does the distributer advance at thoser revs? I've got electronic ignition, and it does the same thinkg with both gas and petrol.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Put a timing light on it & check the timing - rev it to see if it is advancing.

Listen carefully to the exhaust - is it misfiring or still smooth?

Check the carby & see if it's still supplying sufficient fuel.

Check the accelerator cable adjustme
Cheers,

In neutral or park it should rev its box off. In drive it won't rev past the stall speed, about 1500-1700 rpm. Take the aircleaner off and see how it goes then, sounds like a fuel/air shortage, and as it does it on both gas and petrol air is the most comm

I've checked the battery and the charging system, they seem fine.

How is the "stall" activated? Is in influenced by vaccuum?

A couple of minor additions to the previous posts.

100% agree with removing the air cleaner and give it a rev.

Have a mate stick his foot and the accelerator pedal while you take a look down the carby barrel with a torch and see if the throttle butt

A trick to test that each cylinder is getting constant spark is to put a timing light to each lead while it's idling and the when it's breaking down. Just shine the light onto a dark surface (inner guard) and see if it is strobing constantly, if the eng f

Spud,

I had a very similar problem with my 202 after having the carby rebuilt. Drove it (very hard when I couldn't get over 40km/h) back to the carby specialist... they couldn't figure it out, and were about to pull the carby back down again when the

my vote is the coil...have you had the electronic ignition on this engine long? Did you upgrade the wiring to supply 12 volts to the coil? Do you have the proper HEI coil fitted.

The elctronic ignition was on the car when I bought it about a year ago, so anyone's guess how long it's been on there. Ran fine until now. I'll check it out by replacing a lead and see how that goes.

Even though you have electronic ignition it still may have centrifical weights to do some advancing. Take the dissy cap off and see if the rotor arm moves against the weight springs and returns again with out any slack. some times the weights get stuck an

As suggested check all the leads for resistance and open circuit.
Stall speed is affected by the construction of the torque convertor from factory it is set about 1500-1700 but they can be modified to any speed, to allow for hot cams that need a high st

Also try revving by operating the accelerator lever on the carby fom under the bonnet. If that works then it is the cable.

I can see Spud having a very busy few days :-)

While you're at it, fuel filter and fuel pump would be worth a check. I also have a vague recollection of fuel pick ups in the tank causing problems too. Mick, you're the spanner man, how's my memory?

This can also be caused by a collapsed muffler...give it a thump or two and listen for rattling noises...

Cheers...Dave

I had a problem with my Subaru it was starving for fuel and had no power. Going up a hill in 2nd it would cough and sputter, and would not overtake anything on the open road.I replaced the fuel filter under the bonnet no help, then someone told me there w
