Just checked the stamp on a 186 stored in the shed. Just doing some plans for a rebuild, checked the pad on the right hand engine mounting, which is stamped with 186P. Checked the manual, gave options of 186A (High Performance) & 186K (X2). Where does 186P leave me?

Hi Rowdy.

Just to clear up the 186 prefixes.

186A = 186 hi-comp (not high performance) HR
186K = 186 X2 & 186 S HR (not just X2)
186P = 186 hi-comp HK/HT/HG
186S = 186 S HK/HT/HG
186L = 186 lo-comp HK/HT/HG

Dr Terry.
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Doc & Paul,
Had a HR given to me, it's sat in the Shed for 18 months, so have finally decided to have a crack at a resto. Never thought the research and planning was so involved, but I want to do it right, so thought I'd hit the books and plan

found this site the other day whilst browsing the net, it lists all the holden six numbers ie: just a sample from this site. better to open the link as everything is in colums and easier to read.

There are some ommissions and errors on that site IIRC, but most of it is correct.
