Ok this is gonna be hard to explain but I own a 1975' XB the motor I currently have in it is not the original.
Here is my problem, I wanna find out exactly what the motor was (eg. 351 4V, 302 2V etc)
Now I know 1 way is to look up the engine code (EG T, G) on the compliance plates.
But since I dont have the car the motor came out of, that option is not possible.
But I do know the VIN Number of the car the motor came out of.
What I ask is that does anyone know where I can use the VIN Number to look up the car and either find the Engine Code or What Engine it was.
Any Help Would be appreciated.
ENG NO - JG31ST72633K
Thanking anyone who can help in advance...!

OK without the plate there isnt much to go on unless you try ringing Ford itself. From what i can work out the motor is out of a falcon station wagon, build date is December 1976. So if original the engine will either be a 2V 302 or a 2V 351. Can't hel

Do you have the engine number?
That would help a lot.
If it is the original engine from the vehicle that you have the VIN number for, then it's engine number should match that VIN number and as Paul stated will be a 2V 302 or 351.

From memory the XC 351s had blue rocker covers and the 302s had orange rocker covers. Sure fire way to tell is to measure the stroke with a piece of wire. 3 inches for a 302, 3.5 inches for a 351. Edited by user Friday, 29 September 2006 9:10:00 AM(UTC)

XB owner, grab a piece of wire, old coathanger should do and straighten it out. Take a spark plug out. Drop the wire into the hole and hand turn the engine. When the piston is bottomed out measure the distance that the wire rises out when you crank it

My Uncle used to work for ford and he's got a book with all vin numbers and option codes that went on that vehicle from the factory from 1976 to 1977.
If I'm going to HELL it will be in an XB COUPE!

There's no way to tell. Sorry. You'll have to measure the stroke somehow. (piece of wire down the sparkplug hole is one possible way. 3 inch stroke for a 302 and 3.5 inch for a 351. I have also heard that 302's and 351's had different colour rocker Edited by user Thursday, 12 October 2006 7:13:56 AM(UTC)

My rocker covers are orange which is supposed to mean that i have a 302, Also i have a c4 and my car does not have a disc-brake rear-end and it has a 2bbl manifold with a 350 holley,
So in all likely-hood my car is a 302 as 351 equipped ZG's apparentl

Is the engine in the car original? If so you can tell what type of engine it is by reading the info on the Vin plate. Some ZGs 351s did come out with 2 barrel manifolds and carbs. They should have a nine inch out the back and an FMX box. In all likely

It has a 9" Diff, with Drum rear brakes and it has a C4 for certain, im pretty sure its the original engine, but who knows, someone could have rebuilt it and thrown 351 rods and crank in there.............
Have to measure,

Tony, read what the code is on the plate. Where it says ENG. should either be T, K, or Y. T is 4V 351, K is 2V 351 and Y is 302.
