I have a 253 in an LX TORANA, I have rebuilt this motor a few times now, its fairly stock with 40thou os bore a mild cam and standard crank and heads, but with new valves & springs I have replaced the cam each rebuild.
The Problem i have had, is after a month or so after each rebuild , i start to get Backfire through the carby, at around 2500 - 3000 rpm
as soon as this happens i chec the cam, and usually the cam lugs have worn a lot, not all of them, just 2 or 3 and never the same lugs.
i getting fed up !!!!!

How do you run in your cams?
Do you uses new lifters each time?
Do you use any additives for cam run in?

You should ALWAYS put new lifters in with a new cam. You should also ALWAYS use a running in lube (also known as cam honey) on your cam and run the motor at a fast idle for about 20 mins when you first start it up.

There are some variations in opinions

Like Qute basically said - failing to run the cam in (in some shape or form) is a major cause for lobe sheering/wearing.
