Howdy,
Sitting here contemplaiting the ute's destiny & was wondering - Can you take a 308 past 60 thou? Here's the reason: I have a 308 aussie pattern which a mate & I put new bearings & rings in [bores honed only - are they supposed to be egg shaped:)?].

However we stuffed up with the cam & the motor ate it. The heads are a different story, I've spent $1000 bucks on the heads with porting new valves & everything, & the whole lot probably wouldn't get $500 on ebay. She didn't blow much smoke after the first day & seemed to run ok except for the cam chewing noises.

So I was thinking about building the bottom of the motor to the same quality of the heads.

This is where my dielema comes in- do I just repair the cam & replace the cam bearing (which means pulling the motor down again anyway) or do I go the whole hog & have the pots bored & honed which means 80 thou plus new pistons etc etc.

The cooling system is a brand new large radiator (standard 308 HQ I beleive), clutch fan & water pump. The build for the 308 will be (if done) for gas as a cruzer with a bit of a lump in the cam, to make the chicks look.

If I go that far I may as well get a turbo block & put a TH700 behind it so I get some reasonable economy! Which leads into my next thought - there's no reason I can't put the aussie internals in a turbo patterned block, is there? Maybe I should just save my pennies & get a blue 308 bottom end - but I've already spend money on the new rings & bearings in this one. Then of course there's the lure of just putting a toyota blower on the 186.....

Sometimes you just shouldn't think too much hey!?

You could always get the block sleeved. They are getting rare and it's better than dumping it for scrap.
If you're not going to be making mega horsepower it will be absolutely fine.

As long as it's a HJ or later block you can. Early blocks (when they were all 4spd or trimatic) are a different casting and don't have the metal there to be drilleed and tapped.
You can take them 80 thou - seen plenty. But if they have any corrosion you
