NA fairlane 3spd auto
3.9L multipoint injected, ruff idle, revs good and punchy but put it in drive beyond a joke take off power, sometimes stalls. drives ok at higher revs. rotor button and cap new, coil looks to have been replaced. have no idea where to start?

try checking your base timing
Ignition Timing (Base)
Engine to Operating Temperature.
Engine at Correct Idle Speed.
Stop Engine
Connect Timing Light.
Connect Jumper Wire between the Terminals on the Diagnostic Connector.
Start Engine.
Set Tim

also check basics like fuel filter, air filter, Fuel quality, spark plugs, h/t leads, vacuum leaks(get a can of carby clean and spray around intake manifold gasket, vac hoses, throttle body and anywhere else you can think of)

i havnt got a lend of a timing light yet but can find any vacuum leaks and tried a map sensor from another car no luck. sometimes blows black smoke tho

Hs it had a manifold gasket replacement? They may have fitted a CFI gasket on it which effects injector spray on the multipoints
