I got a big problem. i moved me car out of my driveway and changed the back wheels and then when i started it to go it wont move.
It is a 351 xb with c4 and hurst shifter. it goes to select gears and sounds like it is selecting gears but will not move. and the tailshaft is not moving. is my gearbox buggered or something else broken. any ideas???

snd when i grab and pull on the gearbox cable i do get movement from the car. any thoughts on how this problem and any temporary fix to get to gearbox shop

Hi Andrew. It sounds like the shifter cable needs adjusting if it reacts when you mess around with the cable. I recently put a B&M Megashifter on my C4 and had to spend a heap of time mucking around with cable adjustment to get it spot on, it didn't hav

yeah there is plenty of fluid in there. it seems to move when the revs are high sorta about 4 thousand. ive tryed playing around with the selecter cable. its like its got a high stall converter when it dosnt. yeah i really have no idea

Does it move in reverse or is the result the same in all gears?

no it dosnt mate. it only moves backwards or forwards a few centermeters when reved. when u change into a gear it feels and sounds like it engages and wants to move but it dosnt. is this what happens when a gearbox ****s itself?? im not sure

Hmmmmmmmm. Andrew, as long as your driveway isn't on a slope try dropping your tail shaft. If it's the gear box playing up you will be then able to at least roll the car. If it still won't roll with the tail shaft out then the problem will most likely

Have you tried putting the other wheels bsck on and see if it moves, i dont mean to sound like a smart a???, perhaps the newq wheels are not clearing.

If Paul and Ron's suggestions don't bear fruit i"m wondering if the problem lies in the valve body. I'm afraid this is pretty much where my VERY limited understanding of auto transmissions hits a wall.

Here's a couple of very basic things to check.

1. Is the handbrake jammed on?
2. If you fitted larger wheels on the back are they binding on anything?
3. When you jacked the rear of the car bit you accidentally damage/crush any brake lines?

thanks guys. good to know there is fellas out there who help a fellow ford man out in time of need.
i havnt had time to remove tailshaft yet. i was thinking wouldnt the tailshaft still spin if car in gear and the gearbox was working??

Andrew, take the new wheels off and check the calipers.
Put the old wheels on for now and then jack the back wheels up and ( here's the hard bit) put the car in neutral and see if you can spin the wheels freely. If not something is jamming. Get someone

Andrew, keep us updated on how you go. We have recently purchased an XB coupe (302 with a C4) and we had a similar problem. Got it home moved it backwards and forwards a few times then it just didn't want to move anymore. We had it jammed in neutral thoug

hey andrew, i would jack up the car,,undo the cable from the trans, see if you can select different gears, manually, and if you can, see if you can get neutral,,i had to do this with my conversion, due to bogey job of making new arm for tbar? if you can
more than basketcase than a bear!
