Ok folks, whats the concensus ?? The tri is leaking oodles of green fluid from the inspection cover on the trimatic. The engine is a 253.

Am I correct in assuming that there are some Welsh plugs at the rear of the block ? I cant get the inspection cover off to see for sure.

If I am correct, can they be changed with the block in place and work with the TRI out, or just pull the donk and do the lot ?

Of course if there are NO plugs there, what else ?? A cracked block ?

TIA, John

Yes there are welch plugs on the rear of the block and this is where the water will be coming from. I asked this question about 3 months ago as I had the same problem. The answer is yes it can be done in place by removing the tranny and tilting the engi

Peter,

Next dumb question. Is it possible to leave the trannie in place and just pull the motor out ? I have a feeling the Oil sump lump with fowl with the cross member. It just saves disconnecting all those linkages and cables. Urgh.

You can but its awkward. Best to remove the whole front panels and slide the motor forward off the box.
the convertor will leak gallons of oil so disconnect it from the flywheel.
Probably easier really to remove the lot. but do drain the transmission oi

Sounds like a 50/50 bet, When I had a HD I had to do it in one piece due to the oil pan issue.

So off with the bonnet, off with teh prop shaft, all the sundries and see how we go. I must admit undoing the torque converter locking it back as in the GMH

Just pull the motor out and leave the transmission in place. Easy on HQ-WB. Just need a trolley jack and lump of wood under the transmission pan. Couple of tips:

Get some longer bolts the same thread as the ones that hold the tranny to the block, and u

with the 6 cyl holden, i have found it easier to pull motor and box when the trans is manual,
WHY?

If youre pulling the sump off, use a new genuine sump gasket. They are one piece, easy to install and dont leak.

Hi Adam, yes agree with u. I had a HD with powerglide. The only way to get the 179 out was with the tranny. PLus with other cars I have owned and worked on..I know all too well about the spigot alignment.

I think you missed my point. Not NEW, but GENUINE. Genuine are all neoprene one piece, hence no cork and ugly joints.
