There should be a groove machined into the front of the input shaft - where the splines start.
From memory, 1 groove is M20, 2 grooves is M21.

Not always. Put it in 1st gear, and turn the input shaft so that the output shaft turns once. Count how many times you turn the input shaft. 3.74 = M22. 3.05=M20. 2.54 (V8) =M21. 2.54(6cyl) = XU-1 M20 or M21. If it's any other ratio post back here and i'l

i have always worked on:
no groove = M22
1 groove = M20
2 grooves = M21

exceptions to this rule are rare.

Exceptions to it are common im my experience. Especially with the proliferation of aftermarket input shafts. Plus XU-1 box with 899 cluster has 2 grooves, and it's not an M21 (or an M20 for that matter). Same for L34 track pack box.

All V8 aussie 4spd boxes have a longer input shaft, including the V8 3spd.
