I have a Blue 308 in a WB ute that seems to be quite gutless. It's also getting around 130km to a tank of fuel. It's not being driven hard and the motor doesn't need a rebuild.

Any suggestions on what may be causing it to be so thirsty?

Hi hx-sandman.

More info is required. Firstly as the 308 wasn't factory fitted in the WB ute, has it been modified ?

If it has a stock cam & Quadrajet, it probably just needs a carby overhaul (including a new float) & a good tune. If it has a Holley
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

A streched timing chain will do this too, also the blue 308s had a weak camshaft and the lobes may be losing their bump.

Cheers

They actually have a "weak" oil pump, causing the cam problem.
As well as what Terry has said, make sure the distributor is working correctly, especially the vacuum advance. And that the valve in one side exhaust isn't stuck shut.

The motor was from a WB Statesman and has allegedly been built for unleaded. THanks for the advice guys - will check the cam, carb and timing chain, timing may have been retarded a little too.

Regarding the weak oil pump how do you know which ones are better. I just bought a disassembled 253 and dont want to rebuild it twice.

If it has an alloy housing and its secondhand throw it away and buy a cast iron housing one (aftermarket).

Hi HX,

How much vacuum does the engine have ? Low vacuum will effect heaps of things, economy, sluggishness and tranny.

If nothing else turns up it may well pay to check that the cam timing is correct. This can easily be set incorrectly on a Holden V8 especially considering that this engine has not long been rebuilt. Hope this helps.

Worn cam maybe. If you are one link out on a Holden V8 timing it may work. 2 links out and there go your pistons. Wrong ignition timing can do it. Vacuum leak at the dizzy can do it. Major vacuum leak effects timing, tranny and the carby. If vacuum is too

Another dumb thing I just thought of...BLUE MOTOR....EGR valve issues. Is it in place, or gone or sort of working. If they freeze in the OPEN setting, you get low vacuum all the time. It means bog on hard accel. no get up at all really, and wil use more j
