Just rebuilt a red 253 got it all back in OK started first hit but it won't pick up the oil (new pump) drive is definitely engaged and I tried priming it with an oil can down the pressure guage hole, got a very limited amount in that way, filled the filter ('though you lose half of that putting the filter back on) Has anyone else had this problem or know of a remedy? (Yes the sump is full)

pack the pump with a lightweight grease, prolly 2 late for you now. I think you can spin the pump with a drill (in reverse?) and an old dizzy shaft like you can with a chev??

As Mechatron says, use Vaseline or grease inside the pump, and fill the filter with oil. But you've probably already killed the bearings and cam, unless it only ran for a few seconds.

Yeah the grease worked straight away. Ran for four goes at about a minute each time before I got enough sense to ask for help. The motor was assembled using copious amounts of moly-graphite engine assembly lube on the bearings and cam so I'll just have to

A few things at this point.
(!) Did the pump come off the block at any time ? Did the gear get put back in ?
(2) Did the shaft from the camshaft actually engage the oil pump spline ?
