I put this post up to find out if anyone from this forum was actually there. A slinging match was not what I had planned. I wanted to know if the cars or more so the owners had done something to warrant the attention they got from the police or if the e

Hervey Bay car show last year had several cars done over by cops while parked up for rediculous reasons such as hot rods with bigger % than allowed wheels on back compared to front, even though they were mod plated for several things they got booked as unr

if the mods are listed on the engineers certificate, the cops can't book you for it. Quite simple, keep your car legal and you wont have any problems

Bundy, I agree with Chris, A registered car should be legal at all times no matter how many times it is driven, the laws are there for a reason. What is a cop going to think, 'oh this guy only drives on weekends, we will let him go' !. What a load of crap

Hey basketcasebear,

In Queensland you can simply download the Transport Department Light Vevicle Modification Guide:
http://www.transport.qld...Modification_jan05v2.pdf

There is a whole section on wheels and tyre

Basketcase, I suggest you talk to an engineer and not the transport department in whatever state you are in. On my engineers certifcate, he even listed 15x6 inch rims along with everything else that wasn't standard on my car, as they came out originally w

The problem with commercial vehicles and tyre selection is that a commercial vehicle is designed and rated to carry certain loads, hence must use a load rated tyre, not a low profile fat etc. Using a wider rim/tyre combination can change the tracking, dr

hey dmax as i said,
the wider the track, the more stable the vehikle, also the tyres i have put on are rated, and so is the diff, conversion rated, the extra width of the tyre is in the side walls, the tread is exactly 10mm wider? and well within the 1.5

The wider the the track, the greater the force exerted on your wheel bearings. A small increase, lets say 25mm, could increase the forces by the order of 200-300%. How long till the wheel bearing fails going around a corner?

gee dmax,
i am a bit confused here? I thought the reason why you are allowed to go 1.5times wider tyres. is because that extra width makes absolutely no difference to the integrity of the bearings?? or vehicle??
if it did make a diff,, they would not a

Wider tyres is not such a big problem of the vehicle TRACK remains the same - i.e. extra wheel width is evenly distributed to the inside and the outside - this is unusual on Ford wheels - almost all the wheels I have, 6", 7" & 8" have 4.5" back spacing, s

thanks for that explanation fellas,
still confused then as too why they bother with solid steel cages in the racing cars??
for impacts at 250k plus hits?
also,, if one could measure the extra load on a wheel bearing, with an extra 20mm wider tyre, al

The load on a wheel bearing is increased with increased track, ie the leverage caused by the extra distance between the outer edge of the tyre and the wheel bearing.
eg. standard may be 5mm from bearing to outer edge (horizontal dist). Putting 20mm wider

uuummm? dmax,,
from what little i know of engineering, it seems they have a term about,, the "moment", i am sure this refers to when any given load, whether live or dead, excerts a force in a given situation??
Now I am not sure, but I would guess that
