Browno,you have a great attitude by having the balls to ask questions as this is whats needed to learn your trade. Never be afraid to ask even a silly/simple question as this could be the difference between losing a finger or eye. I've seen plenty of yo

ozchevy that would be great, most of what I want doesnt need to be all that accurate or large, your homemade jobby may just do it! thanks

yes i agree with you HZute-efi-VS5L you lend your measuring tools and they use them as a G-clamp or come back with welding spatter them! I also worked as a diesel fitter for about 3 years in the mines underground and surface what mine were you at? |

I did my apprenticeship as a fitter and machinist too and I had a great mix of fitting with a dose of machining.
All of our equipment was old school manual Machining and all one-off things to design and make. A great way to learn but not something that

Here are a couple of pic's of the Lathe I started to make in 1981, it's still unfinished, need to still make up the screw cutting change gearbox. Brisbane tadesman wages are $25-$32 an hour permanent plus penalty rates obviously the more skilled then the more money, diesel fitters are about the same komatsu is screaming for fitters there is a major skill shortage here but they are paying the big do |

Thanks fellas for all the advice and kind words That lathe looks pretty impressive Glad to hear theres alot of options for a fitter/machinest as i like to travel I think my town must be a bit like cobar,not much around and im at 6.70 a hour but i know |

interesting thread. Montesa is 250...? You might find a lathe in some of the many auctions they have from closures etc. Diesel fitters in Kal are getting upwards of 100k, probably, more up Tom Price.

awesome ozchevy. i was trying to figure out how to make a simple lathe, from a pedastal drill? for doing simple things like small pulleys out of nylon. i hacked a couple of pulleys on my drop saw, which work ok, but dont look pretty. and it is hard to |

Funny you should say that, I actually copied the basic design from a book I have on Southbend Lathes published in the 1950s which my Grandfather gave me. Every part of the lathe unbolts or unscrews. The bed is made from 3" x 2" Channel with s
