Hey guys.

I have a 99 vt calias and i have a slight problem with the ignition

This only happened today when i was ready to leave work.

I turned the key and everything seemed fine until it turned over twice then died on me, so i tried again and there was nothing, took key out, then i noticed my ignition lights were still on but no key in the ignition??
Would this be just the barrel gone or is it more then that?
Ive got 2 keys for the car and neither will allow me to start the car.
Can turn keys all the way but seems lose

Can anyone help me out with this problem before i spend $$$ on tow + workshop only to find out i could of fixed myself.

Ive already been told i need to replace the whole thing not just the barrel which will cost me up to $500 ( told by a friend )

Hi mate,
the first thing I would do is undo the shroud to see if the back of the ignition has had the screw come out. It sounds like it has popped out then you where cranking it and thats why the reds where still on as it would have gone back to the run

It looks all in good order cant see any problems from the out side

You will not see anything wrong if you have not remover the column shroud to see the rear of the ignition switch. The other thing that could have happened is the plate at the back of the barrel itself could have snapped. You will need the undo the screw w

Hey mate just as a thought it could be something too do with your steering lock , we had a car the other day that did the same thing , eg turned the key and then it felt like the barrel went limp all the dash lights came on but would not start ,, ? is the

The back of the ignition barrell has broken the cast alloy pin/rod that rotates the ignition switch...common.
You would have had the key getting slightly harder to turn and then not returning properly,also the steering lock would not lock as you removed

Yep, gone are the days where a shifter, screw driver or pair of pliers would get you going, or help start anything worth starting for that matter.

I agree with mmazz on this one. I've had to replace a few of these recently in VR & VS models, and VT use the same system.

The rough price for a new barrell, keyed to your existing key, is around $45 at a decent locksmith.

I had the same thing happen to me in my VT a couple of years ago,filled up with fuel and went to start it and bang.
I've also heard that whatever ignition barrels are left at the dealers is a
