The definition in the hard starting section of the factory engine manual is "Engine cranks ok but does not start for a long time". Leaking injectors are mentioned and so is a faulty in tank fuel pump check valve. This will allow the fuel to drain back i

Try swapping your fuel pump relay for another similar relay e.g. horn? and see if that helps.

Have you replaced the fuel filter, I had a VT and when it was cold it started fine as the sediment had settled in the filter, but once it was all stirred up it would cut out at times and would be hard to start hot, could be worth a try.
