All 253/308 pre about 1972 are neoprene rear seal. After that they are rope. 253 and 304 and 308 cranks are different. The 5 litre cranks have heavier counterweights than the 253. The 304 and 308 cranks have different strokes (only just).

Hi 253 crank would be to light, cost to much to rebalance the crank to suit the 308 pistions. 308 cranks are geting cheaper, need one do it for $35.00 304 for $45.00 0407 56 53 28 ps vic west side . melton.

As Antoni says, the weight is the difference. Stroke is the same except 304 is slightly less.

but the smaller stroke in turn gives a higher compression height due to same rods. 0.02" difference between pistons.

surely a smaller stroke must give a lesser comp height when using same rods and pistons.

304 uses a different piston to 308 due to the different stroke. 308 has a compression height of 1.69", and 304 of 1.71". Boom, yes you got it the wrong way around. _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) Edited by user Wednesday, 7 May 2008 3:11:14 AM(UTC)

I see what you mean now. I think mrhqute and myself read your post as "308 pistons in a 304 push the pistons up the bore", whereas the truth is the opposite. You said the same thing as me but it was confusing.
