Hey Guys,
My carbie is knackered... was using a 4 Barrel Q-Jet and all the vaccum advances are shot, theres free play and my mate tells me that its sucking air big time... Its been running rich and my spark plugs are now darker than a coalminers asshole :)

Anyway, I'm not mechanically minded and don't really know where i should go. My mate, who is a mechanic, is trying to sell me his Holley Carbie, 600 i think, with mechanical secondaries. I think he's trying to sell it to me, not really caring if it suits or not and just wants 400 hundred for it!

Anyway, i've read that its common that people drop to powerful of a carbie on engines that aren't suited. Mine is just a straight 253, Trimatic, in a Panel van. Nothing worked and is run of the mill... and i want to keep it that way, just after a sunday driver - not a drag racer?

If you guys could reply and let me know of any carbies recommended that would be great.... My Pano has no choke in the dash and my mate is saying i dont need a choke, other people say go electic choke....

Any advice????

Hey,

Nothing wrong with a 600 Holley, as long as it's a vacuum secondary model for your engine. The only downfall is it may just a fraction too big for a 253 if it's just a stock run around. If you can find a Holley 465 in good condition, that would be

The vacuum break is there to control the secondary air flap opening when flooring the car.
If the car is "sucking air bigtime"...it would most likely be causing it to lean out...not run rich.
Quaddies have problems with the floats absorbing fuel and not

Pretty sure a 600 is too big on a mild 253, especially with mechanical secondaries. Sure, it's not the last word in too big, but go for something smaller. Or have yours reconditioned.

Hi Carby
Quadrajet should work fine and are ideal if set up properly, As they have small primary venturies for running at light load(economy)and larger secondaries for heavy load/high speed (power).
Most of their faults have been mentioned. but sometime
