Does anyone out there know the casting numbers for holden 6 heads. Or does anyone know a definate way to identify red heads? Apart from the obvious - 202 @ 186 are open cahamber, 186 has adjustable rockers, 179 is obvious as it is the only one with closed chamber and non adjustable rockers, what about the rest? I believe all the rest are closed chamber adjustable rocker type? Surely by looking at the heads or numbers you can identify a 149 from a 161 for example. Any help is much appreciated.

There are only a few types althoughthere are probably a few more casting numbers than types and there is also the pollution red heads (from memory so correct mistakes please):
202, low comp 173 and I think low comp 138 - open chamber and rocker bridges |

Close chamber are 138 149 161 173. and XU-1 202 186? open chamber are 202 186 179. low comp 173 161 149 i think are open chamber. all 6 cyl red motors are adjustable up to HG & LC. HQ & LJ 202 173 on, all got non adj rockers.

Thanks HK1837, is it not right that 179 has closed chamber and non adjustable rockers? I thought the high and low comp was alot to do with what pistons where used (flat tops, dish top etc), does it apply to the head as well?

no the 179 is same as 186 etc head. you are thinking of the 173. the 179 etc with non-adjustables went up to 71 (before release of HQ) and then all the heads were non adjustable. Also there was no cc 186 or 179 heads

At the back of the cyl head, on the left above the number 6 exhaust port, there is usually a H or a L. H stands for closed. L for open. Some times there is a number, i have seen the number 4. and a 9 in its place?

H is high, L is low but it only applies where the compression ratio is determined by the head and not to XU-1. 179, 186 and 202 use dished pistons for low comp engine and I think 138 does too.

Thanks guys for your input, i really thought it would be as simple as casting numbers would let you know what head it is without taking it off to look at the chambers ie 2811930 is a 202. I cant seem to find a list anywhere of holden 6 cyl head casting n

Post the numbers you have and ill see what I can find. The H and L are the best pointers.

Hi Guys.
The best method of ID is the casting number. On all Red 6-cyl heads this can be seen without removing the rocker cover, which is necessary on Holden V8 & Blue 6-cyl engines.
Its a bit complicated because some engines were built with either |
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |

the 186S engines had the same CR as their low-po counterparts. Lots of other things were changed but the compression remained the same

Hi, I think the 138 piston had half the top raised higher than the other side. L C 138 had adjustable rockers from memory. Bazza
