hey all i was wondering what is holdens best 6 cyl red blue black grey etc, like power, fuel wise, reliablity etc

They are all reliable. 202 EFI black makes the best power. 138 red is probably the most economical but in a heavier car possibly not so. If you want some power but reasonable economy a red 173 with extractors and a very mild cam is probably the go.

To add to what HK1837 has said, it does depend on the weight of the car.

Ive found with stock motors in heavy cars, that a 173 doesnt use any less fuel than a 202, it just doesnt have the required torque. However, in a lighter car (e.g. LC/

what would be best for a vk i have the black motor in it at the moment with extractors i should mention its carby not injected,what would be my best one to go for power, fuel doesn't really bother me as i am on gas.cheers

An easy conversion for a VK is to an 3.3 EFI motor. It was an option for this series, so everything is plug in.

Agree with Dr Terry on the EFI engine. Buy a wreck and swap it all over.

By mild cam I meant basically stock or just above it. Just an improved cam over stock that maximises torque and economy. eg Wade 259a or Crow 35613 for a carbied engine. But for t

will a injection set up off a red efi or off the black efi(manifolds etc) fit a carbie black motor.

Hi meecar.

There is no 'Red' EFI motor. It is a bit confusing because the some VK EFI motors actually get a red rocker cover, but they are all the same 'Black' motor. The only EFI Holden 6 is the Black VK unit we are talking about.

if your up for a conversion, a vn-vr buick or vs ecotec is more efficient, and has more power.

id like to put a v6 in but its just that im no good with wiring and wouldnt know were to start with the wiring one bloke quoted me a $1000 just to do the wiring nothing else other than that no one else wants to do it.

not really musksell. a dilapidated vn is cheap mate. most parts are interchangeable.

a $200 vl is good too. most parts are interchangeable too.

how hard would it be to put a vl motor in,i know with a vn ya undo the struts and K frame and a few other bits and then just roll the motor out through the front and put in the vk by doing pretty much the same thing.what would be the better option.
