Was talking with a friend the other day about "muscle cars". I know this has come up here before, and there is always arguments about what is and what isnt, and in fact probably nothing built here apart from maybe the XW Bill Bourke special even comes close to proper Yankee Muscle. This lead me to thinking about the actual definitive cars that we can put at the pinnacle of Australian built or Australian raced Muscle cars. Basically the best of the best. I've listed my handful, in no particular order. Any other suggestions eg some Chrysler product?

XW Bill Bourke special;
Norm Beechey's HT GTS350;
Alan Moffat's Coca Cola Mustang;
Bob Jane's ZL1 Camaro in 1969/70 427 guise;
Peter Brock's 1979 Bathurst winning A9X (simply by how dominant it was).
Pete Geoghan's XY Super Falcon;
2002 V2 7.0L winner of Bathurst 24hr race (#427).

Other possible contenders but probably won't make the cut:

Brock's 1984 Bathurst winning VK;
Dick Johnson's Greens Tuff XE Falcon;
Brock's VB 1979 Repco rally winner;
V8 LC XU-1 as raced by HDT as a prototype at Bathurst (easter 1972?);
Bob Morris's 1979 ATCC winning A9X.

Mcormacks Charger (sports sedans eligible?)
Pete Geoghegans 67 Mustang (based on how many races it won)
Nissan GTR touring car
What happened to Bob Janes other ZL1 was that used at the drags?

The engine is in the Hugger Orange car now. I think the car was sold off and destroyed at a later date. I thought about the R32 Godzilla's but if you were going to add it you'd have to add Tricky Dicky's RS500 Sierra(s) and I didn't want to do that (since

Hi Guys.

The Muscle Car definition topic haunts us yet again !! There are so many views & most are valid.

Byrons list is for mostly unregistered race cars, so real US style street muscle doesnt get a mention, with the possible exception of Bill Bour

Terry, I probably shouldn't have used "muscle" in my original post. Maybe "iconic" aussie cars, actual cars not a series.

All,

The topic heading is asking for trouble. The muscle car was created in the U.S.A. If you really want "Definitive muscle cars" then only two-door, mid-sized with biggest factory or exclusive engine options can qualify. However, in Australia a muscl

Why indeed do they only have to be Australian cars...?
Jaguars xjs V12 at Bathurst in 83 was definitely the cat among the pigeons....
Excluding foreign cars leaves the picture unbalanced....

e.g the 92 6.3 litre Aston MArtin....absolutely lovely car

Indeed. But did the Jaguars dominate that much? What about one of Jim Richards Porches?

How about I rephrase the question to "Iconic individual Australian cars (road or race)". Those that we all remember because of their ultimate success or domination

Dr Terry is in my realm. HK1837, the cars you list are not suitable as they are either one-offs or race cars. AMC magazine has published a description of what constitutes a muscle car so that may be a help to you. If you were to rephrase as you suggest, t

Looking at the original list of cars has made me realise and remember a few things that I think are important to our motoring history. It is all too easy to rewrite the books these days and this is not a good thing.

Alan Moffat's Coca Cola Mustang is a
