Looking at the original list of cars has made me realise and remember a few things that I think are important to our motoring history. It is all too easy to rewrite the books these days and this is not a good thing.

These cars as they existed back then as you put it can only remain as a memory in the minds of those who were there. The glamourising of these cars in stories after the fact is just ridiculous in some cases. The Beechey car today is a disgrace to the bree

Australian built muscle cars that faithfully follow the muscle car mould are very few and far between.

HT GTS 350
HG GTS 350
LC GTR XU-1
VH R/T E49
V2 GTS Coupe

Amazing that you count them all on one hand. Four from Holden and one from Chrysler.

Hello HK1837,

Musclenut is very good with that list when you look at the cars and at the criteria of a "Muscle Car". Dr Terry hit the nail on the head with his comment.

The LJ XU-1 was a carry over model that did not take the exclusive engine capaci

The use of the same engine in another line of cars is interesting.

The 186 engine was used in the HK/T/G, so that should knock out the LC XU1 if you remove the GTS 327 for using the Impala/Pontiac engine.

If you include them, then what about the SLR

I was thinking exactly what Warren said. I do understand the idea of the only model in the lineup with a particular engine size, and I know the LC XU-1 186 is very far removed from the engine in the HT/G as compared to the type 1 327 being the same as the

All,

The original muscle car is the 1964 Pontiac GTO. It became a "muscle car" because it was a mid-size car that was fitted with the engine from the full-size car line. This had not been done previously in a volume selling model. A massive trend had b

Hi Ben.

Firstly, I think that CSV, along with Wayne Gardner, CDT, etc. shouldn't be counted as they are not 'official' hot Holdens, sold thru Holden dealers with full GM-H warranty. Come to think of it, post split Brocks couldn't be allowed either.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Terry, we think alike!

Also worried that any definition that is straight down the line may throw up something that meets the criteria but isnt really muscle eg an Aussie built RS2000, or a Brabham Torana! And also thinking LC pre XU-1. Does the GTR fit

The Chrysler Valiant Charger E49 had a unique version of the 265 engine as well as a unique transmission when released. No other 7S29 vehicle had either of these features let alone other cars in the range. Yes, the 265 cubic inch capacit

Hello All,

Excellent arguments for and against here. I love the extra input to correct deficiencies in areas I am not good in like Toranas and Commodores. I dont know how to quote properly but this is what the original idea was from musclenut -

Hello Jim,

As a fan of all Australian muscle cars, I agree with you completely. But in contributing to the main discussion here at present I have deliberately omitted the cars with more than two doors. I have tried to focus on the matter in hand.
