Hi All
I have a HR that has an All Aussie 4 speed installed, however the gearbox cross member has been cut out for the shifter.
Car is unlicensed and needs to go over the pits, does anyone know the best way to repair the cross member? I want to keep the same gearbox and would prefer to have stiffeners welded in but then I would need an engineering report yeh?
I know CRS have a chassis kit which includes a gearbox support, would this be a better option?

Have a look at a HK powerglide or all synchro 3spd crossmember (HR Powerglide might be the same too). These should have the mount in the right place for an aussie 4spd in a HD-HR assuming the engine is sitting as per original. Dr terry may have more ideas on this too, he knows HR's far better than I do. |

I'm not sure we are talking about the same things here.
The gearbox crossmember, which bolts to the floor frame, runs under the gearbox & supports it, shouldn't need to be modified for an Aussie 4-speed. A standard automatic (Powerglide) crossmember suits an Aussie 4-speed perfectly.
The main floor beam, which is part of the frame of the car, runs up & over the gearbox & usually needs some serious surgery to allow for shifter clearance.
Usually fitters just cut a hole straight thru the top & bottom of this beam & will need to be properly reinforced & engineered before going over the pits.

You could always restore the floor member to original and use an Opel instead......

Correct Dr Terry, do you know how can you modify this crossmember, surely someone must have completed the modifification?
What I was thinking is if the CRS chassis kit was installed (which includes a crossmember from each rail) it would reinforce the body enough to compensate for the modified original crossmember?
Thoughts??

The chassis kit only really reinforces the longitudinal beams, you will still need to fix up the hole. This is such a common issue I'm sure any engineer you speak to could give some ideas on fixing it. It's probably worth talking to a few certifying engineers, before you go too much further. Appreciate your response, I will do that.
Just for info found a good write up on a HT with the same problem, ultimate answer was you need to replace what was taken out. Seem simple but due to clearances etc it's a bit of a challenge.
