Hey y'all
My latest drive is a 97 ford transit, with a vs 3.8 v6 in her. Commodore 4 speed, transit diff.
She is a belter of the mark, but in top gear, towing the camper boat, runs out of grunt on hills, this is to be expected, because it is a fair amount of weight in van, as well as boat and trailer.
What I was wondering was. Would one of these v6,s that come with the factory supercharger, give it that extra amount of torque for the load??
Might be easy add on??

You'd probably have to buy a whole Supercharged vehicle and use the engine, loom and gearbox. Plus maybe fit an intercooler. There is a reason that diesels, and in the past long stroke big 6cyl petrol engines (and in the USA BBC's) got stuck in these sort of applications, and you've just found out why! I find a similar story with my 4.0L V6 in my Hilux, far superior engine to the time bomb D4D in most instances, but a 4.0L+ turbo diesel would be better for the heavy towing up hills applications as you have to work the V6 hard rather than loping along with a big diesel (unfortunately the 3.0L D4D 4cyl is worse off than the 4.0L V6 in those applications).

Note that if the V6 is suffering that much the 4L60 will be too - i'd be carrying a spare one with you if you go on long trips! Run the biggest cooler money can but, synthetic fluid and if you have to rebuild it get it done to the strongest money can buy.

The supercharged V6 is different from the heads up, so it's not a simple swap onto your existing motor (assuming it's a VS-VY ecotec, and not a VN-VR version).

As Byron noted, there's variations in the loom and memcal as well, and there's also a fuel pump controller.

You'd be best off finding a whole car (VS are much easier as a conversion than VT-VY).

Gearbox lost the lockup converter, but is otherwise basically the same as the regular V6 box.

Hey thanks men,
I do have an extra radiator for the 4L60.
Probably not worth all the hoo har,
She goes pretty good, only on long hills is there a small problemo.
Being a LWB mid roof 2tonne, filled with all the mod conveniences a mild mannered basketcase could ever need, every cordless tool known to man kind, bucketloads of mech tools, freezer, shower, cooker, etc etc. not to mention all my shampoos and conditioners, complete manicure set, I mean it all adds weight.,
Then throw the campererboat on the back.
Not really complaining but.
Just need to figure out how to post pic in new forum now.

Another way out would be to fit a VN VP VR V6 engine which is about 20Kw down on the Ecotec but get a stroker kit to take it out to 4.2 litres.

This is not a cheap option though.

Probably more trouble than it is worth? I miss my 308t400 in a transit.
Will probably just start stripping weight,. Being a campervan, mmmm? Let's see? Side sliding door, back doors, redo with aluminium,
Those big steel c shaped things underneath, hhhmmmm, bit over the top! ( just kidding)
Although not having to take 2 tonne now, I am sure we could get some weight out.
OH, NO, basketcase is thinking up a new project!!!
