The 3:55 banjo limited slip diff in my 6 cylinder HT is on its way out. It's only done about 50 000 miles. Not all parts are available(no crownwheel and pinions) and I think a diff that's looked after no matter it's strength should do a lot more mileage than mine has before a rebuild. What could be the simplest option if I changed to a foreign diff.Doesn't have to be super strong like a 9 inch but at least reliable. No plans to be dumping the clutch at all.Is there someone on the gold coast who knows just what's required to bolt something in?

The only stronger bolt ins are HK-HG Salisbury, but a 9" will be cheaper. Cheapest will be a Borg Warner out of a Falcon or Commodore, but will be slightly wider and need to be modified to fit. If you want to do it easy and can live with a slightly wider diff a HQ-WB Salisbury will fit, either the V8 HQ-WB style or even a WB small Salisbury. It'll need mounts welded on and you'll have HQ stud pattern. Easy to fit HQ rotors and calipers on the front and run HQ pattern wheels. You'd have to get some positive offset wheels for the rear though as a HQ-WB diff is about 2" wider overall, if you are running 6" you might get away with HK offset on the rear. |

I probably should have mentioned previously that I'd like to keep original wheel track width and retain the original stud pattern. My wheels are 7" and they definately can't be pushed wider(rub on guards). Thanks for your suggestions.I'll start by looking into an early salisbury and go from there.

Forget finding a HK-HG Salisbury. Axles alone fetch $800 each. It'll be cheaper to get a 9" made up to suit your brakes, just run an open 3.25 or 3.5 centre. Will need a tailshaft made too but so would a HK-HG Salisbury as that diff was never available behind a 6cyl. If you want to save some $ you could use the same process to get a HQ-WB large Salisbury shortened and HK-HG mounts welded on, and get custom axles made to suit. You can even leave the HQ-WB backing plates on, just use the HK-HG handbrake cables and drums and maybe the wheel cylinders. Or simply use the banjo's whole brake assembly. Would need a custom tailshaft too but the issue with these diffs now is parts. An even cheaper way would be a VN-VS diff, do the same thing - however most of these are 3.08:1 ratio unless you go looking at certain Fords, Skylines or some of the rarer Holden centres. I picked up a whole BW diff the other day out of a late (early 90's) XF Falcon 5spd ute for its rear drums for my HK, it was $100. These are 2.92:1 LSD though - probably too tall for you. If you can find one in like 3.45:1 or thereabouts these might suit you, they are only 25 spline but would be fine for a HT 6cyl. Would have to be shortened with Holden ends and custom axles on them to suit your brakes. |

I would just be looking out for a good crown and pinion and all to just turn up. LSD can be bad for all that metal floating about, with open you don't get all that crap metal in the oil. I change the LSD oil at about 10,000km or use a magnet to catch the metal.
