Hey guys a friend of mine sandblasted and powder coated my air filter housing and to my shock and horror that once it was returned to me and installed back onto the car and ran I found out he didn't take it apart and remove the filter before sandblasting. Garnet was the. Sucked into the engine and ran. From inside it sounded fine which is why it was ran fine for a while but I feel the damage is done. From outside the car it sounded like shit.

I guess my question is once I strip it all.down and check for damage I think I'm looking at getting the block bored out. For the next smallest piston Size increase what would that be and for that size do I have to replace the cam as well?

What's the average price this bore procedure and is it a pretty routine thing if I take my block into a standard machine shop or mechanic?

Are new can shafts and pistons expensive? If it needs to be done what's a good set up that will give me a bit more power without making me chew through the petrol? If that's even possible of course. Thanks advance guys. I'm a noon when it comes to specs. I can strip it and and reassemble it but the other stuff is not my forte.

Thanks guys

Hard lesson to learn, but never trust anyone when it comes to cleaning engine parts. Now you know.
How far you bore it depends on how bad the bore is and how much needs to be taken out to clean up the wear and scratches you are assuming are there.
20, 30, 40 and 60 thou are the usual sizes. Don't be talked into boring it out to the maximum, just go as far as necessary to clean the bore up.

The best place to get a bit more grunt is from the cylinder head, and maybe camshaft and carburettor.

I wouldn't hazard a guess at how much it will cost you to do the whole engine as it's been too long since I've done a holden 6.

Just wondering. Would the can in be strong enough for the necessary upgrade or would that have to be upgraded also the other running gear is stock would the stock diff be fine also? Are cams expensive? I wouldn't go anything insanely different from the stock can just enough that hopefully the upgrade does extend further than the can and the pistons.

I would like a comfortable daily driver that runs nice but a slight power increase. My first drive would be from yamba to cairns. Does an bigger cam make highway driving better or worse?

Have you done a compression test? I'd be doing that before condemning the engine.
Attn camry drivers. The accelerator is the skinny pedal on the right.

It would be more accurate to perform a cylinder leakage test.

An added feature of a leakage test is that you can check the ring's sealing ability it different positions in the bore. It needs to be fairly consistent throughout the piston's travel. This can't be checked with a compression test. Also the size of the cam does not effect the readings.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

The heads been taken off and my dad says the bore looks fine. I'm in NY so sorting out this issue via correspondence til I can get home and do the work myself. How and what liquid do I use to do a liquid test? Thanks. Also would a new mild cam effect highway driving? Would it cost me a kidney and what else besides the cam would I have to replace? The rods that push through the engine or can stock ones be used? I figured whilst its apart I might upgrade a few things of its not to expensive.
