You can have a look at the Rare Spares column cover lower HK for floor shift application. http://www.rarespares.ne...&description=7434058

It is a fairly straightforward dismantle/re-assemble type job. It's best remove the column as a whole & do it in bench vice.

Remove the steering wheel & blinker stalk, before column removal. Disconnect the gear linkages, fabric joint at the top of the steering box & the wiring plugs under the dash.

The column is held in place by the screws holding the plate to the floor under the carpet/mat & the larger bolts easily visible under the dash.

Mount it in a vice & remove the blinker switch etc. to remove the shift tube & any other bits not required. Fit the blank section & re-assemble the blinker switch etc. Mask up the top & paint it in trim colour & let it fully dry before refitting it to the car.

If it was originally a column Powerglide, don't forget to bridge or re-run the inhibitor wiring otherwise the car will not crank over.

A time consuming job for sure, but not rocket science. Be patient, take your time & you will get a good result.

Thanks Dr Terry. Wont the steering shaft need something to help centre it at the base above the rag joint?

From memory, the lower bearing assembly supports both the shift tube & the steering column shaft.

After the shift tube is removed the steering shaft remains supported.

The best picture I know of is this one, from the HT supplement:

HT Console Shift Column

The HK lower bearing arrangement is slightly different, but the lower bearing in a HT, between the inner steering shaft and the gearshift tube is a roll of 6mm felt, about 40mm long glued inside the gearshift tube. This is all that guides the lower end of the steering shaft before it gets to the steering coupling. It is probably more of a seal than a bearing, and is referred to in the parts book as an insulator.

For your HK you will need to retain the gearshift tube, and you will also need a spacer and a retainer to make up for what is lost when you remove the gearshift lever from the lower end of the gearshift tube, if that's your plan. I suggest you invest in a parts book to see exactly what is different.
