Have a problem with my power steering squealing at higher rpms or sharp throttle pulls. The cars a hz with a 308. All the power steer... pump and box + new lines has been reco'd. It runs the triple row pulley that sits flush against harmonic balancer and the flat spaced out pump bracket. Its a later model pump.... reconditioners said its a vt 304 pump. Does the pulley sit out further on the vt pump or are they all the same early or late. Only ask because I know the later triple row pulley sat out from the harmonic balancer. VT V8 pump is one row back compared to VB-VC that had a similar pump to the HZ. When I fitted one I had to swap the Aircon & power steer belts around (luckily the A/C comp was a double-row pulley).
There's also the metric/imperial fitting difference. |
Cheers,

Thanks Mick. When I bought the car it was running a 253 with the pump and everything already there and I've swapped it to the 308. I had it reco'd before fitting to new engine. So if its truly a vt pump or not only going off what Im told. The pump uses the pulley closest to the harmonic balancer and looks pretty straight to me. Knowing theres a difference in the triple row pulleys that sit flush or sit out wondered if the pump is that touch too far forward still? Edited by user Sunday, 24 January 2016 8:47:47 AM(UTC)

HQ-WB use the pulley with the PS pump up hard against the harmonic balancer. Next one out is the water pump/alternator. Commodore pulleys are pushed one groove outwards from memory in VB-VH maybe? |

Im trying to see if: Knowing that the later harmonic balancer pulleys sat further out than the earlier ones, common sense would say the pulley on the power steer pump sits further out too? Which would cause enough deflection to squeal if its sitting further out than it should be

Had a mate measure his factory hz. 60mm from pump to rear of pulley. Mine measures the same so can only guess all is lined up. Ive cleaned pulleys and replaced belts. Still squeals when reved or higher rpm before gear shift then goes away. New water pump, alternator and reco power steer so should be no dramas with bearings.
maybe just worn pulleys... its about all ive got left now.

I have had this problem in the past, I think I tried to use a VL pump on HQ-WB
If the belt squeals, I assume it has oil on it from all this recent work in it from dirty hands..
take belt off and clean it in host soapy water and a scrubbing brush than spray some belt conditioner on it. Squealing belts are common on ecotech and this is how I fix them |

Ok ill give it a go.
I must admit i dont like how plasticy the modern compounds are the belts are made from.
