Hi all

I have a HK/Ht/HG Salisbury 10 bolt with no axles. Now I want to retain originality somewhat on my HT so would like to rebuild this diff over a Diff change.

What are my options in regards to axles. Assuming genuine axles are continuing to sell like solid gold. Is there another option like machined HQ etc. I have access to a late HQ diff so is it worth stripping this diff for axles to modify ????
Also after drums which this doner diff also has. Are they the same as the HK/HT/HG rear drums.

Cheers

Drum brake setups are the same as HK-WB, just different wheel cylinders along the way. And obviously the HK-HG drums themselves are different to HQ-WB (bore and stud pattern).

You'll have to get yourself some axles made, will cost about $800 a pair locally. I'd make them with HQ centre and HQ stud pattern then you can just run HQ-WB drums which you can buy new. Swapping to HQ discs at the front is easy.

I'm running HQ on the front atm and while I'm all for originality. Returning to Ht front disc set up felt like a step backwards for something that is not cosmetically that different and is really just bolt on disc and callipers .
I was thinking of retaining a Ht drum/stud pattern on the back due to the value of these diffs and change the front disc stud pattern to HT match. I'm only running stock rims so wheel choice is not an issue.

Is that too far or should I just go HQ all round ?

I'd just do HQ all around. The diffs themselves are easy to get - you can get a new one from the USA with tubes. It is the axles that are hard as they were made here.

Is that the case? Is someone remanufacturing the Australian version of that diff?
The diff pumpkin and centres are straight from the US, but I thought the tubes were plug welded on here, as they are a unique length.
Particularly as the US 10 bolt was a semi floating axle with C clips in the diff centre to retain the axle, and loose bearings at the backing plate end, while the Australian version was a sealed bearing pressed onto the axle and retained at the backing plates without the C clips.
The local axles were made by Spicers, I believe.

There are also differences between HK, vs HT/G. The axles are different (no, I don't remember how) and the differential case has a different arrangement for the brake pipes.

The tubes and axles were done here but you can order the centre and tubes with the correct ends directly from Moser in the USA - you just have to weld the spring perches on.

It has always been the case though that the axles were the hardest to get. Even in the 80's the housings and centres were relatively easy to buy but axles had already been removed and sold.

Axles aren't hard to get made in Australia though. I just priced a set the other day for a 9". I have an XW GT-HO diff in a HK, but I want HQ stud pattern not Ford, a pair of axles was around $800. 10-bolt are not much different price wise.

Ok so going forward a good option for me might be to get locally manufactured axles in HQ pattern. Part out my spare diff and use its full drum setup ( back plate, drum, shoes, internals including bigger HQ cylinder)
And while I'm at it freshen up the existing. HQ callipers and discs on the front.

Not full HT original but an honest upgrade that shouldn't detract too much from originality.
Same can be said for my wiring loom I guess. I had a full original style loom made with NOS connectors etc but when it come to ignition I chose a loom supporting electronic over points. Fair mod from original I think if you intend on driving it.

Cheers

What hubcaps are you running (if any)?

Do they fit OK on HQ-WB rims?

I'm putting 15x6 Pontiac Rally rims on my HK, but I did look at set of Oldsmobile SSIII rims. Painted grey and dressed with the stainless slot surrounds and dress rims they look a lot like a HK-HG dress rim. If you painted up a centre cap like a GMH Lion you'd think that is what they were unless you looked close. It does show you that the story about HK-HG dress rims being given to GMH by GM US is more than likely true. The only trouble with them is the aftermarket ones are all wrong offsets and widths, you need to find originals. I had the same problem with the Pontiac Rally rims, all the aftermarket stuff is wrong offset and you need originals especially if you want to run 15x7 on HK-HG.

Mmm ok. I hadn't given it much thought. I had hoped to just source some stock steel rims wider on the back be it ordered that way or modified and I assumed the rare spares dress rim/hubcaps would go over nearly anything.i didn't think Ht or HQ steel rims would make a difference.

Longer term for a bit of a change I was going to go some centrelines and maybe something flasher from show wheels but was going just the dress rims to get it on the road.

I talked to the main diff shops as they do them all the time for conversions. Talk to one who does Moser axles.

Just remember to tell them that you want a 10-bolt axle with whatever stud pattern, but make sure you get the bearing type right.

Not bad buying, used ones were $350 each in the 90's. Stupid place to advertise though, probably cuts out over 50% of your target buying audience.

Well done
I don't think there would be many NOS 10 bolt axles laying around.
