Hi all, just doing some chasing up on a VH SL/E here without log books and trying to determine if the block is the right one for the car. The 5L block is stamped 13C2 or 3C2 (the one is rough and could be a casting mark) which leads to it to most likely being early March 1982. The rego papers state the engine number has been it's only source of identification since first rego, but the engine number has been restamped and the engine has had machining done previously. It was painted Holden red at this time and fitted with HQ heads and a Redline Maxitork, so 1972 might not be out of the picture. What webbing etc would I look at to determine if it is Red or Blue? And would a March 1982 block be too old for a July 1982 Adelaide build? Cheers Aaron.

A 5L block in VC/VH can be up to 9 months prior to the car.
They weren't selling many of them (especially prior to the VH SS) but the blocks were cast in economic batches, so they hung around for a while before slowly being used up.
Cheers,

Mick

Engine can only be 1982 or 1992, it can't be 1972. So just look for 308 or 5.0L on the side to tell you 1982 or 1992 respectively. As Mick says they can vary wildly in cast date vs vehicle assembly, however as its been restamped it makes no difference if its the original or not.

Thank you for the quick and infromative replies. It is a "308" stamped block, so happy with that.

It's the original block. paper work says so end of story.

The first old blocks have Holden cast on them up the top and the later EFI have a bigger font date code.
