Yeah, someone has really gone to town on that HR.

If you look closely, it also has the stainless belt mouldings which run along the door's window sill & then up the rear pillar. These are also taken from an HR Premier sedan.

What about the parking lights, in the grille ? You often saw the Premier items fitted (with the white rim insert & 'target' lens).

It looks very busy with both Premier & Special badges, as well as all the extra mouldings.

The parking lights (the 2 little ones) in the grille are different for Premiers, when compared to Specials & Standards.

The Special's parkers just have a chromed die-cast surround & the plain opaque/clear lens. The Premiers get a white painted insert in the outer rim & a more complex lens with an extra circle & 4 radial protrusions, which resemble an archery target.

You just need to look at a Premier parker & visually compare it to a Special parker to appreciate the difference.

...looking on in interest, what may've been the logic in having this lovely Special sedan kitted out with all the good factory options, AND THEN turning her into a pseudo Premier prior to the dealer ?...

...Were some of the factory fit options allowed on a Special, but just not available on the Premier model ??

Interesting thread

I have had a couple genuine 186S HR's the last was in a earlier thread a couple weeks ago although it's a powerglide.

My mothers cousin was a Holden fanatic and a country Holden dealer. I am sure the code he told me to look out for was as mentioned earlier, 1746. He called this code the performance package which were fitted with 186S, 4 speed, 3.55 LSD differential and disc brakes.

Maybe the new code on Primus's HR had the 3.36 LSD?

Do you have any engine bay, gear stick, and dash photo's showing where the choke pull should be Primus?
Worth while checking the differential ratio. May still have a red tag behind the diff housing plug which reads something like (use only limited slip diff oil).

The yellow LSD warning sticker was on the inside of the boot lid on HR passenger cars.

Most unlikely, but it may be remotely possible if you were to find an old established Holden dealer that still had all his sales bulletins & ordering procedure literature from the HD/HR era, intact.

Many on this forum, like myself, would be very interested in such a discovery.

The code means 186S 4speed, we know that much. It appears all of these were 17xx coded. It is the next two digits that are not a known quantity as yet. The code is the mechanical configuration of the vehicle.

...being a mechanical option code, could it have had power steering fitted way back in the day....then subsequently removed ? An identifier might be an extra pulley on the harmonic balancer (if the original engine is still around)....

As I said earlier, much of the stuff on this car has been fitted after it left the factory, most likely by the dealer or the first owner.

You use the term 'factory' loosely. It could mean made at the factory which most Holden & Nasco spares were, or it could mean fitted at the factory, which only applies to genuine options. Nasco was GM-H's parts & service dept. They quite often sold things like the rocker & wheel arch mouldings as kits, with all the necessary screws & clips etc. to be fitted as accessories to dress up cars post sale.

I think that this car left the factory as a regular Glacier White Special sedan with an Aqua interior. It had the optional 186S, an Opel 4-sp gearbox & disc brakes. These were all regular options. An HR of this build configuration was not uncommon in that era. It may also have an LSD or even power steering, but these haven't been mentioned thus far.

From that little photo & your comments we can tell that it has had these added:

Rocker mouldings
Wheel arch mouldings
Premier door belt & c-pillar mouldings
Premier badges on the c-pillar
wide steel wheels
Premier boot lid trim

None of these were available as factory options, but can be added at any time after the car was delivered to dealer, by utilising a Nasco kit (if available) or by just purchasing the bits from the dealer's spare parts dept & bolting them on.

These all make the car a little unique, but they weren't factory-fitted. GM-H did not build the car like this.

Terry, I think its Grecian not Glacier!

The insert codes are a big mystery, don't hold that against Dr Terry. They only appear on vehicles with a Dandenong body plate so are rarely seen. To date no-one has found a comprehensive list of them and what we have is put together from real cars so hard to find all variations.
