Here's a couple motors that are at Fishermans Bend.

1st is holden 5 litre over head cam. Apparently made 220 kilowatts as is and was used in a company hack for several years.

2nd is a GM Wankel engine that's been laying around for decades.

Nice work.

Rocker covers look like the Wheels magazine "scoop" from ~1990

Love the Wankel attached to what looks like a TH350. I wonder if this was what was in the Roadpacer? Did GM cast some of the items that attach to the 13B to make it fit the Holden body?

AFAIK the Mazda Roadpacer had a Jatco 3-sp auto just like other Mazdas of the era. I don't think GM-H did any conversion work on these things, they just supplied semi-finished bodies to Mazda to their specification & they finished them off in Japan. I think the interior trim was from Mazda as well.

They had a few unique bits like lightweight bumpers & a low diff ratio, (4.44 from memory).

That is a Mazda engine to my eyes, the exhaust manifold and reaction chamber are GM cast and it looks like a Holden oil filter, like it has been adapted by GM or GMH to fit a GM vehicle. I always thought what you just stated to be the case also, but this makes me wonder what else was going on. I'll check the data I have at home and see what it says if anything further.

When I went into the photo archive way back in 1998, two friends from Melbourne came with me for the day.

We stumbled across pictures of the road pacer complete. The photos were taken, according to my friends, at Melbourne docks.

I was not interested in them at that time other than curiosity, but always remembered what he said.

If Holden has a complete engine then the mystery deepens.

GM were big on Wankels in the early 70's as the way of the future there was a lot of magazine space used on articles about the rotary Corvette that was coming. I'm not sure what killed them first, thirst, emissions or the seals. It may even have been the lack of torque made them feel sluggish and not appeal to the average driver. All the outposts would have been sent out engines to play with.

Here's a photo of the inlet manifold.

They don't look like N.S.U or Mazda 10a, 12a or 13b rotor housing castings to me.
They don't look like the experimental wankel rotor housing castings GM America done either.

It wouldn't surprise me if GMH designed their own version of the Wankel rotary.

New engine designs were all the rage back in the 1970's.
I still have the original wheels magazine I bought back then with the road pacer article in it stored somewhere.

Another privately designed engine that had initial promise back in the 70's was the Ralph Sarich orbital. There was a big push to get some Australian Government investment in this Aussie designed engine but it fluffed out by the late 70's

From memory the Sarich motor was trialed in a XA or XB Falcon. I still have them articles tucked away. somewhere in some old magazines.

It'd be good to see what is on the rotor housings. The POA documents for HJ list special vehicle package XT2 as the Roadpacer for Toyo Kogyo and lists all the items that are different to a normal HJ Premier but it doesn't tell you anything more.

Sir Joh the Premer of QLD was the only one who supported Sarich to try to get it off the ground at the time as he was the only one who supported things that maybe good for the nation and was a great inventor himself who had an eye to such being worthy to invest in, not like the other laze dolts who would not even know what they were looking at even if it was a Holden red motor and would never support anything truly Australian.

So many Aussie Inventions have been pissed up against the wall in this nation.d'oh!

It was bought out to get rid of it and it was claimed to be too efficient at the time as it was not in the interest of some big business, so the got rid of it, like so many other inventions.

I can't remember the rest of why it failed, I have the info some where.

The problem with the Orbital was meeting efficiency requirements in all aspects - not only power & consumption, but also production processes.
It wasn't buried by big business. Nor were the engineers who perfected an engine to run on 1L per 100km executed by Exxon-Mobil.......

Not sure where you get the reference to JBP, as Orbital have been going strong for many years in Osborne Park WA (and nearby locations), so there's no benefit to the Qld government...

Big business respect Orbital, and Orbital have been pivotal in R&D projects over decades. The most recent one that Aussies may be aware of is the R&D work they put into Ford's LPi system. They have also developed fuel system technology used by the big corporate car makers in low-end cars in the global market.
Cheers,

Mick

Yes they are still going in W.A but diversified into other products.

BHP was a 50% shareholder in the Sarich orbital development days. (early/mid 1970's)

From memory Ford America jumped on board at a later date..
