Cant find much info on here about the original paint finish of the wheel covers.
Every car show has a broad range of shades where no two are the same, always seems a bit odd.

I think they came from the US, so look to US sites for something similar and see how they are painted. I don't know if they were ever used on a US vehicle, but lots were sent here.

I thought they were unique to Australia & were the first Australian designed wheel trims? Plenty of wheel trims did come from the USA,I don't think these did.

Attn camry drivers. The accelerator is the skinny pedal on the right.

^^That has been around for years but I think the truth is they were sent here from the USA for GMH to use on the new HK GTS. Just like the HQ was supposed to have been an Aussie design, another myth. Look how close in design the Olds SS III wheel looks:

Heres a couple of good ones from my collection.


The dark grey is basically the same finish as the top of my dash just lighter.

Wayne, I have a set of wheel covers from a Dandenong Bright Blue Metallic HK327. They were removed from the car in 1975, and given to me when I bought the car in 1981, and have been stored ever since. I think they'd be as close as you'll get to unfaded originals, if you're interested in some photos.

Yeah stick a photo up mate and a closeup of the texture would be good.
Interested to see how dark or light they are.

I wanted to put the Olds SS III rims on mine on HQ stud pattern but you can't buy them in 15x6 new, only 15x7 and they are the wrong offset (4" I think) for a HK-HG. So I just bought some original 15x6 and 15x7 Pontiac Rally II rims as these are the right offset (even these in new repro are all wrong for a HK-HG, also 4" backspace from memory. From memory need 4.25" or 4.5" backspace on 15x7). You can get Olds SS I rims in 15x6 in 4" and 15x7 in 4.375" backspace, would look good on a HK.

If the trims were supplied from the USA I'd guess the centers were spot welded on here in Aust and maybe painted here as well.
Centers are almost the same as LC LJ arent they?

I heard the centre logo was done here. LC probably just copied from HK.

Yeah I think the main stainless section was done in the US and then sent here unpainted and then the chrome steel center was then spot welded on, then painted.
The yanks would have done it in stainless if they did it.
Dont know if that dodgey inner mechanism was installed in Aust.

I had the Pontiac rally 15x7 on mine , looked great but the ss cragers it's the best wheel for muscle cars
I would put some photos up to show the wheels but it's still a mongrel to put photos up on here

Bear in mind that the HK has different offset to the HTHG. HK rubs on rear body on EH wagon, had to go HG but still had to panel inner body.

Those are the wheels I had on the k , 15x7 could only fit 215 tyres on the back and 205 front as the car is slammed
Looks good though, Holden should have fitted them from new
Hubcaps on a gts Monaro?what were they thinking!

We were lucky to get 6" rims! There weren't any locally made tyres that could handle the GTS327, GMH had to get the local tyre manufacturer to specially make them high speed D70H14 14" tyres. As for alloys back then, that was a fledgling industry too.
