Hi There,

Mine is a Holden Captiva Sx 2009 Diesel.

I just recently started with this problem, and had drive belt replaced (November 21, 2015).

Now, mechanic asked me to bring in on Monday, but I'm worried...

You can check the video I attached along with it. It's the chirping noise and then the vibrating engine noise. Mechanic said it is the tensioner. He is so effing confident that I'm worried now.

Anybody have come across this problem previously and what was the fix.

To be honest I'm worried about money, however, more importantly it's the time and stress with this issue that is worrying me more.

Update:

Had the tensioner (November 23, 2015) replaced; the sound went down, but it makes a weird rattling noise in the reverse gear. The chirping sound did not go away when I went to pick up the car, and he just sparyed a bit of oil between the belt and the pulleys, and then it went off, not back yet after couple of days.

I am looking at taking it to a Holden dealer, as my mechanic can't seem to fix it.

Any comments would be really appreciated. You can find the tensioner noise in the previously given link of youtube video; will upload the reverse gear noise soon.

Hi there,
I had the same problem on my daughter's Diesel Captiva. I replaced the drive belt tensioner, and belt, but still had the rattling sound. I took it to a couple of mechanics and they couldn't diagnose the problem. I eventually replaced the pulley on the alternator. The pulley on the alternator has a sprag clutch in it that allow the pulley to free wheel in one direction. If the pulley locks up it make the belt vibrate excessively. I replaced the pulley and problem solved. You need a special tool to remove the pulley. Hope this helps Cheers Mike

Thank you so much Fastlane, and everybody that answered. The problem has been fixed. It was the alternator pulley that seized. At least, that's what I was told. There is no mention of sprag clutch from Holden.

Holden Captiva Sx 2009 = I have the exact same problem; replaced timing belt as part of the service manual and noise appears! - the Holden service centre said it sounds like the tensioner needs replacement! I said how can I get this after a Holden Service centre replaced my timing belt as part of the 100K km service!!!!
I already spent too much and the rattling is happening. How can I get an issue like this after I service my car!!! Where is customer service principals in Australia!

Any ideas of what should I do? I don't want to start replacing the tensioners, A/C etc and drive shaft, etc!!!

Zaheer, Did an alternator replacement pulley fix the problem you had with your Captiva? was yours petrol or diesel motor? AL.

Yes, it was the alternator pulley and the problem fixed. Mine was a 2009 diesel sx.
