Just been looking at exhaust options for the 5.0L HK GTS. I have a mid 300hp 350 for it, probably will fit a TH350 with a decent stall, but maybe a Muncie haven't decided.

Original plan was to use a set of extractors I have here, and run 2.25" pipes to resonators (as per original, then step down to original 2" system and muffler as per original. However after talking to Settlement Road exhausts in Victoria it won't work that way as the angle from the extractors to the resonators doesn't work. I diodn't want to run the original rams horns as they will be restrictive on this engine (11:1, decent cam, alloy heads, alloy intake, HEI ignition and 750DPP).

So what do people usually run? I wanted to at least keep the factory style rear muffler with the quad outlets, however the guys at Settlement road can sell me the muffler but you can't get proper replica tips and pipes anymore. The Rare Spares tips are good but apparently the angle isn't quite right and with a bigger cam they tend to sound funny.

I was going to get the stuff as i'll be in Melbourne with my ute in late January, and was also going to pickup a factory style twin system for my HJ Premier at the same time too.

The rams horns aren't too bad, and a lot of US cars are going back to them. Depending on how original you want it, and how loud, a system with 2.25 rams horns, opened up from 2" ones, either the offset HK resonators or the in line HT/HG style, 2" to the rear muffler would be good. The Rare spares tips have the wrong bend angle of approximately 90 degrees after they leave the rear muffler. They are close though, and not the source of the exhaust note issue.
They wouldn't be that difficult to make/have made and chromed if you want them exact. Rigpig may be able to help with dimensions from an NOS part, and I'll draw it up if necessary.
The internal chambering in the Rares rear muffler is not per the original, which is quite complex, and doesn't sound right to a lot of people, me included.
Mark (Settlement Exhaust) has done a better job of the muffler but still not quite right.
I have run just the rams horns and resonators with no guts in the rear muffler, and it isn't too loud, and not too restrictive.
Marks system was copied from NOS bits, except the rear muffler guts.

The problem I have is I'm not sure as yet whether i'll run the TH350 or a Muncie with 11" HT bellhousing, so the RH exhaust manifold and hence engine pipe design isn't fixed. This is why I had intended to get the rear muffler and pipes, and the pipes up to the resonators then do the front pipes locally to suit extractors (which won't work) or whichever rams horns I use. So I was looking at alternatives.

I guess I could get the Rare's exit pipes and cut and shut them to get the angle right. Mark reckons they flow too much on the outside tips and suck air from the inside as a result of the wrong angles involved.

How loud are they without the resonators and only with the rear muffler?

Ben has 2.25" ported Ramshorns with 2,25" engine pipes into 2.25" resonators, then pipes step down to 2" into factory rear stuff.

A drawing of the NOS tailpipe may help to massage the Rare's tailpipes to get them right. How far off are they?

has anyone run those bloke hugger exhaust manifolds? Look like an advance on the rams horn but without the clearance issues of most headers on the driver side.

All the ones I found point downwards like a Corvette Rams horn.

I have been studying the thing, and it does look like a Settlement Road rear muffler, modified Rare's tips (unless I can get some closer repros made), the extractors I have, straight-ish 2.25" pipes back to some 2.25" resonators under the rear seat floor and some 2" fabricated pipes over the diff to the muffler.

I've just had a new exhaust fitted at Settlement Rd by Mark, the fit is really good.
They kept the rear muffler I had, which was made in 2002 by Redback. The Redback muffler is fairly similar to the original, and sounds a lot better than my friends HT 350 with a Rare's rear muffler. A pity you can't get the Redback ones anymore, they fit well and certainly sound good without being too loud.
I have an L48 300HP 350 Chev/Turbo 350 by the way, with the rams horn manifolds. No clearance problems with the Turbo 350

I think looking back that when the original exhaust was buggered and that was in about 3 years if you were lucky, people just went for twin 2in and mufflers just before the diff and going out to 2in tail pipes, that was the normal deal you seen and only old blokes would maybe want the standard type exhaust.

I don't remember seeing any of the HK-T-G V8's having the stock rear muffler in the 80's as it was considered as a rubbish setup having a restrictive single muffler.

But now days of cause the standard original type system is the go, hell even the hubcaps are back, but in the 80's you never seen the hubcaps but for some old dude with a 186 Monaro, mags were the go full on with a Monaro.
